Problem: Saw mills tend to measure logs either via weight or by determining the pile density ratio through visual observation before the logs go into the measurement line (can be up to several weeks). The reason being there’s little time and manpower to measure each shipment log by log. Weight and pile density ratio doesn’t provide the information about aspects that are difficult to control - the quality of the logs and the diameter of the logs.
A large number of small logs have a negative impact on the production output that makes mills run inefficiently. Unfortunately, suppliers often attempt to hide small logs in the piles. If the average diameter is too big, then it creates bottlenecks in the production. It is important to use the right mix of diameters in the production during the day.
